Technical issues: status, bugs, problems

3. 8/4/06 Uploading. This is not a bug (but it might be a problem for some). The uploading of attachments is restricted in two ways: a) by file size (which is presently set at 2 megs) and b) by file suffix (which is presently set to any of jpg jpeg gif png txt html htm doc xls pdf ppt pps odt zip). So if you try to upload your 3 meg myPhDThesis.doc or your 1 meg movie myHoliday.mov, neither will work. 2 megs is pretty big, and we thought it enough, but it might not be for some power point presentations (you could compress them first before uploading). We may set this larger if that seems appropriate (and also we could change the suffixes is that seems required).
2. 7/29/06 Almost all the posted first reflections are mis-cataloged. The problem is that the reflection tags in the drop-down menu are in alphabetical order with 'finalRef' first (and other reflection types like 'ref1' below). Authors, at present, typically do nothing, and so the reflection becomes a 'finalRef' by default. What they need to do is to open the menu, scroll down, and pick 'ref1' or whatever.
1. 7/29/06 When html files are attached and uploaded, drupal is adding the suffix '.txt' as a security fix, so myHomePage.html becomes myHomePage.html.txt. This is unsatisfactory for linking to. We are working with drupal about this.
PPT Upload Successful
I achieved success by individually saving photos as GIFs and replacing them in my power point. My apologies to Eportfolio, if it is an entity.

Attaching HTML Artifacts to Ref 3
When I try to attach 2 html documents as artifacts (an essay and a pathfinder) to my recent eportfolio reflection 3, they come up as html coding and text, as in your comment #1. I have inserted links within the text of my entry to these 2 html documents (that I uploaded to my UA webpage), which work fine. But I'm worried that if and when I make changes to my webpage, the links in the eportfolio won't work anymore. Is there a way to fix these html artifacts permanently with reflection 3?

Mmm
Well, unfortunately, any attachment with suffix .html will be wrapped in .txt to make .html.txt which will no longer be live html. This is the security issue mentioned in #1 (as you observe). Basically we/theCMS cannot allow the User to run arbitrary html as black hats could compromise the system. However, you can paste any html you like into a reflection (because then when you hit Submit we run it through a filter and remove any suspect stuff). We should, of course, run attachments through the same filter (but that is a code level modification). If you have a bunch of links, paste them into the body of the reflection itself (and paste your essay in as well). Just put a heading at the bottom 'My essay' and paste it in.
I know this is not overly satisfactory, but we are trying to make the best of a bad job here.

reflection lables
I have tried to change the reflections from final to ref 1 or 2 but somehow after I select the new label it does not get applied.

bugs
I tried to open the relection menu but could not alter the number.

Try this
I would be very surprised if this is not working. Click on Edit. Scroll down to 'Categories'. This is a paragraph which may be open or shut. If it is shut, click on the word 'Categories' to open it. Find the Reflections menu (it is a scroll down/ pop down box-menu) click on it to open it, scroll down to what you want and select. When you have finished that scroll down to the end of the whole Edit page and click Submit (you have to submit changes for them to take effect).

Power Point Presentation
Hi Martin,
I wanted to add a ppt presentation to one of my reflections that is 2.2 MB. You said that each uploaded artifact to a reflection can't be more than 2 MB. Right? So I did as you suggested and compressed the graphics in the ppt. I "saved as" and clicked options, then chose 72 dpi compression and saved, which gave me a 4KB item with a .ppt extension.
But it still won't load into my reflection. No note, pops up or warnings--the system just stops trying to load. Do I have to strip photos from the presentation? I'd love to smack Eportfolio, if there were such an entity.
